LAWN DERBY
PROPOSED MATCHES AGAINST WORLD CHAMPION 1 ENDEAVOURS TO ARRANGE VISIT. MUCH INTEREST IN TROTTING CIRCLES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)' CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An attempt is likely to be made to bring Greyhound, holder of the world’s record of imin 55jsec for one mile, to New Zealand to meet Lawn Derby in a series of match races throughout the Dominion. When approached last year, the owner of Greyhound wanted £lO,OOO to bring the world’s champion trotter to this country for five matches or exhibitions. An offer of about half that amount was made, but it was declined. Lawn Derby’s great performance at Addington on Friday, when he paced a mile in lmin 59 2-ssec, has so stirred trotting enthusiasts that a well-known business organisation is contemplating giving a substantial sum towards the cost of bringing Greyhound to New Zealand. In the meantime, the executive officers of the business concern and officials of trotting clubs are busy endeavouring to arrange satisfactory conditions. Lawn Derby’s owner, Mr J. F. MacKenny, is at present in Wellington. The champion is being kept in training at Addington for the purpose of giving exhibitions at Forbury, New Brighton, Hamilton, and Auckland. He will then return to Sydney, but his trainer, Mr W. J. O’Shea, would bring him to New Zealand at Easter to meet Greyhound in a series of matches and exhibitions in different parts of the country.
