HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATE LABOUR PARTY AMENDMENT TO ADDRESS. UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM ' DISCUSSED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, November 14. The House of Commons turned today to home affairs when Mr Pethick Lawrence moved the official Labour amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the King’s Speech, “regretting the absence of any reference to unemployment.” Deploring the demoralising effects of unemployment and physical deterioration through malnutrition, he argued, that the continuation and extension of social services were an essential condition of closing the gap which he declared existed between production at the rate made possible by the existing effective demand and production at the rate made possible by existing technological knowledge. The Government spokesman was Mr Walter Elliot, Minister of Health, who announced that his Department, at Sir John Anderson’s request, was undertaking responsibility for plans for the evacuation of civilians in times of emergency. He repeated his denial that social services were going to be curtailed. Mr Elliot then proceeded to review the work .of the Ministry of Health.
