NATIVE LAND COURT
NEW JUDGE WELCOMED TODAY. “FATHER OF MAORI PEOPLE.” Mr Justice G. P. Shepherd, newly appointed Judge of the Native Land Court, was welcomed to the Wairarapa at a gathering of members of the legal profession and Court officials, held at the Masterton Courthouse this morning. In welcoming his Honour on behalf of the legal profession of the Wairarapa, Mr R. W. Tate said that members had always had happy relations with the judiciary. “We will be of every possible assistance to you,” he added, “and hope that you will find us of help to you in your work.” His Honour said he was very pleased to hear of the offers of assistance and he hoped that the harmonious relations existing between the '.profession and the Native Land Court would continue. A welcome to “the father of our people, here to adjudicate our rights and wrongs,” was extended by a Maori lady. Replying, his Honour said he would always endeavour to be a father to the Maori people. It had been jocularly said that he was a shepherd to the Maori race and it would be his aim to remain the “father and shepherd of the’Maori people.”
