CARTERTON

CARTER HOME COMMITTEE. MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) -The monthly meeting of Carter Home Committee was held on Saturday, the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presiding. There were also present Councillors G. McKenzie, J. Udy, C. J. De Lacey and the Rev W. F. Stent. The Master of the Home reported that everything in the institution was going along satisfactorily. Accounts amounting to approximately £6O were passed for payment. The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote asking that something be done to the roads leading through the bush in the Carter Reserve, Gladstone. It was resolved that the secretary write asking the Automobile Association for a grant of £5 toward the metalling, and that the work be commenced at once and to cost not more than £lO. Complaint was made regarding drink being taken to the Home and it was decided that the rules of the Homes be strictly carried out The visitors for the current month are- the Mayor and Councillor McKenzie. WEDDING. McGRATH—STRANG. A wedding of considerable' interest to Carterton and district took place at St David’s Church, Petone, on Saturday evening when Nancy A. Strang, of Petone, and recently of Carterton, was married to Mr E. McGrath, of Stratford. The ceremony was performed by the Rev J. Stevenson. The bride, who looked charming in an ivory satin gown and wearing a tulle veil with shoes to tone, was escorted by her grandfather, Mr Jas Turley, of Somerset Road, Carterton. She carried a beautiful bouquet of cream and autumn tinted roses. The bridesmaids, Miss Betty Strang, sister of the bride (chief), and Miss Joyce Smith, cousin of the bride, wore frocks of cyclamen satin, trimmed with silver, with shoes to tone and carried bouquets of cream and autumn tinted roses. Mr H. Warburton acted as best man and Mrs J. Jones was groomsman. A large number of relatives and friends adjourned to the Orange Hall, Petone, where the usual toasts were honoured. Mr and Mrs McGrath were the recipients of many beautiful and costly presents which included ( several cheques. The bridegroom’s present to his bride was a lovely pearl necklet and to the bridesmaids wristlet watches. The handsome wedding cake that adorned the table at the festivities after the ceremony was made and presented by Mrs L. Smith, of Hastings, Hawke’s Bay.

Mr and Mrs McGrath later left for Napier from where they took the Airways plane for Gisborne, where the honeymoon is being spent. Mr and Mrs E. McGrath’s future home will be in Petone.

ST MARK’S CHURCH. ANNUAL SALE OF WORK. The annual sale of work of St. Mark’s Church resulted in over £lOO being secured. Posies were presented to Mrs Taverner and Mrs W. F. Stent, the Guilds president. Late in the afternoon the gathering was surprised by the unexpected appearance of his Lordship the Bishop of the diocese, accompanied by Archdeacon Hansell and Mr S. T. Sprott, the Diocesan Secretary, who were returning from a meeting at Masterton. The following are some of the many helpers at the various stalls: —Plain Stall—Mesdames Sorenson, Stent and Hawker. Refreshment Room. —Mesdames L. J. Harding. Bath. Boyne. Beerc, O. Brazendale. H. Deller, A. King. C. K. Goodin, S. Rooney. Corlett. L. Knutson, and Miss Oates.

Personal. Miss Nance McPhee, of Belvedere, who spent a fortnight's holiday in Christchurch. has returned to her home. Miss Joyce Smith, of Tyne Street, Carterton, who has been on a visit to Christchurch, has returned home again. Mr and Mrs Ray McCann, who were recently married, were guests of honour al a pleasant function held in the Waihakeke School on Friday, when the settlers presented them with a beautiful hearth rug and fruit bowl. Mr C. Jensen, senr, in making the presentation, wished them all happiness in their future. Mr McCann suitably replied. The evening was spent in euchre and dancing, the first prize for the cards being won by Mrs Tinsley and Mr P. Oates. Consolation prizes went to Mr and Mrs R. Franks. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr W. Davies and partner, and the music was supplied by several willing pianists.
