A sentence of six months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Jack Valentine Cleft, a ship’s steward, when he appeared for sentence in the Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of abduction. x Asked by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., if he had anything to say in respect of the charge, Cleft replied, “No.” In all there were three charges against the accused. On a charge of deserting the Tamaroa at Lyttelton on September 28, Cleft was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within twelve months. He was convicted and discharged on a count of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support.
