GOLF TITLE
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY LOCKE SOUTH AFRICAN IN GOOD FORM. SHAW AND SMITH BEATEN BY THREE STROKES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 13. The brilliant young South African professional champion, A. D. (Bobby) Locke, who is also holder of the Northern Ireland open title, won the open golf championship of New Zealand on the Balmacewen links on Saturday by registering 72 in both the second and third rounds. His aggregate of 288 represented even 4’s for the 72 holes. Locke played brilliant golf. Locke won by three strokes from A. J. Shaw, the unattached Wellington professional, and B. J. Smith jun., the Invercargill professional, who tied for second place with aggregates of 291.
The weather was fine for the final day and the faster greens suited Locke, who ran down some long putts. The temperature in the afternoon was uncomfortably warm, but a cool breeze made matters pleasanter about 3 o’clock. Detailed Results are: —*A. D. Locke (South Africa) 75-69-72-72-288; *B. J. IN FORM AGAIN J. P. HORNABROOK SETS COURSE RECORD. YESTERDAY’S COMPETITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The 1937 open golf champion, J. P. Hornabrook has been the subject of much discussion in the tournament so far. After good work in the practice rounds, his play in the open event was too bad to be true, and he failed to qualify even for the amateur championship. Seventy-eight was his best round. Then, playing at Balmacewen in a practice round, he brought in the sensational card of sixty-four. He took thirty-one over the first nine holes, playing five in birdies and the other four in bogey figures. He had five birdies again coming home, and slipped the only stroke of the round at the short sixteenth. Out in thirty-one and home in thirty-three was phenomenal going and three strokes better than Locke’s practice 67 last week and four better than Ewen’s 68 in the second round of the open championship, is a course record. Today’s play was confined to the professional and amateur championship foursomes and the amateur handicap foursomes over eighteen holes. Condition militated against sensational scores. Heavy rain had made the turf soggy in many places, but although further showers fell during the morning blustery south-western winds had a drying effect. Results to hand are: —
Professional foursomes championship, first round.—Murray and Shaw 75, Dyke and Lambic 77, Forrest and H. Blair 78, Guy and T. Galloway 79, E. Douglas and Sherriff 80, B. J. Smith, Junr. and C. Clements 82, Fuller and Williams 85, G. Watt and John Watt 80, J. Galloway and McDougall 80, James Watt and Butters 85, Melvin and B. J. Smith, Senr. 87, J. A. Clements and Boyd 88. The Myers Cup held by A. J. Shaw (unattached) and awarded to the professional with the best aggregate net score in the third and fourth rounds of the open championship resulted in a tie between C. C. Clements (Maungakiekie) and N. H. Fuller (unattached).
The following are the scores in the amateur foursomes championship:— First round: J. Blair and Jackson, 78; Scouler and Dunning. 82; Carr and Francis, 84; Menzies and McDougall, 84- Kiernan and McLennan, 82; Callenter and A vent, 91; Nash and Tunnell, 86; Reilly and Holland, 79; Stratmore and Quinn, 89; Bennie and Clayton, 79; Caulton and McLean, 88; T. B. Ferguson and Wright, 77.
