SURE WINNER
GOVERNMENT AND RACING BIG SHARE OF THE SPOILS IN TAXATION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Race-goers pay dearly for the privilege of risking their money in hazardous speculations, the Government being the only sure winner. At the race carnival the State once again benefitted to a large extent as a result of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, which ended on Saturday, and it share of the week’s spoils will be well over £20,000. On Saturday the largest total for the week, £75,952 10s, was handled on the totalisator, making the grand total for the meeting £230,483, compared with £214,015 for the four days of last year, an increase of £16,468. The five per cent dividend tax benefited the Government to the extent of £10,082 Is, the four per cent totalisator tax amounted to £9219 6s 4d, and the one per cent stake tax £159 10s, making a total of £19,460 17s 6d. When the amusement and wages taxes are added to this total it will be seen that the Government gathers in a good deal of revenue as the result of a race meeting.
