HIGHLAND BATTALION
EXTENSION TO COUNTRY AREAS SUGGESTED ST ANDREW SOCIETY PROPOSAL A suggestion that the proposed Highland Battalion to be attached to the Territorial Forces should provide for the formation of country companies as sub-units of the battalion has been made by the St Andrew Society. The Chief, Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas, has written to the Officer Commanding, Central Military District, Wellington, and to the Minister of Defence (the Hon F. Jones) bringing the proposal under their notice. Mr Douglas expressed the view that there would be no difficulty in raising in the Wairarapa a platoon or platoons or even a complete company. “There can be no question,” wrote Mr Douglas, “that such a scheme would bring to the colours numbers of young men to whom it has hitherto simply not occurred to join the territorial forces. This should be of immense assistance to the success of the recruiting campaign that has recently been in progress.” In reply to the society’s representations, Headquarters, Central District, state that if the scheme is approved one company only will be formed in the Wellington city, and that there is not much possibility of extending the area to the Wairarapa.
