NOTE TO JAPAN
RIGHTS OF BRITISH SHIPS
ON YANGTSE
STRONG EXCEPTION TAKEN TO DISCRIMINATION. PROMISES NOT FULFILLED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. RUGBY, November 12. It is confirmed in London that Britain has addressed a Note to Japan on the subject of the navigation of the Yangtse, and it is believed that France and America have done likewise. The British representations are understood to be based on information to the effect that Japanese shipping is allowed a passage which is denied to British ships and strong exception is taken to such discrimination. It is recalled moreover that repeated assurances were given in the past by the Japanese that, after the fall of Hankow, the Yangtse would be opened, but these promises have not been fulfilled. AMERICAN PROTEST. WASHINGTON. November 12. The Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, announced today that the Government had made representations to Japan regarding the Japanese restrictions on Yangtse shipping. He added that a reply had not been received to the Note dispatched on November 6.
