FINE OF EIGHTY MILLIONS STERLING IMPOSED ON JEWS For Murder of German Diplomat ALL INSURANCE PAYMENTS CONFISCATED BY REICH GOEBBELS ON THE PEOPLE’S “HEALTHY INSTINCT” By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright BERLIN, November 13/ Field Marshal Goering issued a decree today fining -German Jews 1,000,000,000 marks (equivalent to £80,000,000 at the current exchange rate) for the murder of Dr von Rath. The fine works out at £136 per capita of the Jewish population. All sources of Jewish incomes have been cut off, but bank accounts can be confiscated or Jews abroad might help to pay. It is also decreed that Jews will be barred from the retail and wholesale trades as from January 1 next. Jewish owners of shops and residences damaged in the riots must pay all the damages, and the Reich will confiscate all their insurance claims. Further decrees regulating Jewish economic life are pending. The Minister of Propaganda, Dr Goebbels, has also issued a decree banning Jews throughout Germany from theatres, cinemas and dance halls. Dr Goebbels emphasizes that the new laws are not applicable to foreign Jews. Those penalised could sell their businesses, live on interest, or undertake productive work. Jews must leave the countiy wherever possible and for this reason passports would be returned. Dr Goebbels declared his belief that improved Anglo-German relations would be possible only if Britain regarded Germany as a partner with equal rights. He ascribes the anti-Jewish outrages to the German people’s, “healthy instinct.” Herr Adolf Wagner, Bavarian Minister of the Interior, told a Nazi meeting today -that all the smashed-up Jewish shops would be taken over by Germans after the Jews had repaired them at their own, expense. Jews must also pay for cleaning up the ruins of the burnt-out synagogues. Herr Wagner, addressing a mass demonstration against Jews yesterday, revealed that his troops killed a Polish Jew while arresting him. “The accident happened because he criticised and was unable to keep his mouth shut,” said Herr Wagner. Referring to Roman Catholics, he declared that every utterance by the Pope was an incitement to Jews throughout the world to agitate against Germany. -The Church was making Germany its enemy. Later an excited mob smashed the windows of Cardinal Faulhaber’s palace. “Aryan” school teachers in Nuremburg are excluding the Old Testament from their lessons, deleting references to the chosen race.
