The Governor-General, Lord Galway, attended jnorning service at Christ Church, Wanganui, yesterday, when a special guard of honour of girl guides attended. His Excellency read the lessons and the Rev W. Lambert conducted the service. After the service his Excellency departed for Wellington by car, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Captain R. S. Stuart-French. Mr and Mrs Peter Andrew, of Langdale, will arrive in New Zealand on Wednesday morning by the Rangitata. At the Pahiatua Hospital the death occurred on Saturday of Mr William Thomas, of Rakaunui, at the age of 69 years.
Mr E. A. Mackay, son. of Mr J. Mackay, of Kumeroa, has been promoted from His Majesty’s Office of Works in Edinburgh to the head office in London. •
The famous aviator, Mr James Mollison, and Mrs Hussey were married at Caxton Hall Registry Office on Saturday, a London cablegram states. They are spending their honeymoon in Paris and will then return to London.
Mr W. J. Mountjoy, jun., will leave Wellington by the Awatea for Sydney tonight en route to London to take an exchange teacher’s position. He will be accompanied by his wife, and they will be absent from New Zealand for a year.
• Sympathetic reference was made at the meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union today to the loss by death of three old and valued members of the Union, in the persons of the Hon A. D. McLeod, Martinborough, Mr Quentin Donald, Featherston, and Mi’ W. J. Feast, Greytown. It was stated that the Union had been represented officially at the funerals by the president and secretary.
Mr A. Salt, chief electrical engineer at the Waingawa Freezing Works, where he has been stationed for the past nine years, has been transferred to Messrs Thomas Borthwick and Sons’ Waitara works. On Saturday morning he was farewelled by his fellow workmen, and a presentation was made on their behalf by Mr F. S. Smaill, works manager. Mr Salt was the recipient of a firescreen, kerb and fireside rack. He left for Waitara this morning. Promotions for the Hawke’s Bay Regiment are announced as folows: —Captain J. W. Ophert (First C Battalion) to be major; Lieutenants E. G. Kedgley and J. M. Rudy (First C Battalion) to be captains; Second Lieutenants F. B. Lambert (First C Battalion), J. B. Redwood, D. K. McLauchlan and K. R. S. Crarer to be lieutenants. The following appointments have been made: A. S. McWhinnie to second lieutenant, posted to First C Battalion; E. G. Hessel to second lieutenant on probation, posted to Third C Battalion; C. Sorensen and W. Ngata to second lieutenants on probation, posted to First C Battalion; Warrant Officer (I) T. J. Collins to honorary lieutenant (bandmaster); W. Ball and H. H. Hollow to second lieutenants on probation, posted to Third C Battalion.
