LANSDOWNE SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. PROPOSAL TO IMPROVE STREET CORNER. The monthly meeting of the Lansdowne School Committee was held last evening, Mr H. E. Pither presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. McGregor, G.l Ross, A. V. Faulknor, M. Fly, J. S. Dagg,, J. Donovan, J. G. McFarlane, and the headmaster, Mr Jones.

A deputation consisting of Messrs E. W. Payton and F. C. Daniell representing the Masterton Beautifying Society, was received and a proposal to acquire a portion of the school property in order to round off the corner of Blair Street on the way to the hospital was placed before committee members. After heaving Messrs Payton and Daniell, the chairman assured the deputation of the committee’s interest in the proposal, which would receive their unanimous support and the suggestions would be placed before the. proper authorities. Mr W. R. Nicol, board representative of the Wellington Education Board was also in attendance, and the opportunity was taken of discussing with him matters in connection with the new school.

The headmaster reported a roll number of 223, the highest attendance being 203. The attendance was still affected by measles among the children. The primary schools would close for the Christmas vacation on December 16 and would reopen on Wednesday, February 1, 1939. The Department’s inspectors had carried out their annual inspection and a most pleasing report on the work of the headmaster and his staff was placed before the committee. The chairman in expressing congratulations to the headmaster on the results obtained, despite the difficulties under which the work of the school was being carried on, stated that it was quite the most promising report that had come under the notice of the committee. Accounts amounting to £1 13s 2d were passed. In connection with the proposed baths for the new. school, a sub-committee was set up to go into the question of ways and means. It was decided to request the board to arrange for the painting of all outbuildings to tone with the new school. The Lansdowne Croquet Club was granted the use of the croquet lawn for the present season. Messrs Pither and McGregor were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
