CARTERTON

R.S.A. DANCE. ARMISTICE NIGHT AT DALEFIELD. (“Times-Age” Special.) Armistice night was celebrated by the Carterton R.S.A. branch with a “Gaiety” dance in the Clareville Hall. It was organised by the Dalefield members of the Branch led by Mr W. Neilsen. There were approximately 80 couples present and they danced until late hours to music supplied by Mrs V. Ashton and Mr Gordon Udy. After supper Mr A. T. Murray, branch chairman, thanked the Dalefield people for organising such an enjoyable dance. Last year a ball had been held in Carterton but at the invitation of local members this function at Dalefield took the place of the larger ball. He thanked particularly Mrs W. Neilsen, Mrs H. Bain, Mrs W. Thomas and Mr W. Neilsen.

Mr D. Gibb Johnston, secretary of the branch, supported the chairman’s remarks. He considered that such functions were the best means of keeping R.S.A. members in touch with one another and of maintaining the spirit of good fellowship so evident during the years of the Great War. Campbell, M. Heyder, A. Knutson, B. Davidson (Wellington) and E. Hughes.

Euchre Tournament and Dance.

There was a very large attendance at the euchre tournament and dance held in the Clareville Hall last evening. Visitors were present from all parts of the district and the function was one of the most successful held in the hall for some time past. Keen games of euchre were played. The prizes were won as under: Ladies, Mrs L. Humphries 1, Mrs M. Mellish 2. Men, Mr Ron Daysh 1, Mr C. Daysh 2. The consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs P. Hodder and Mr L. Huntley. A successful evening was terminated by an enjoyable dance. The M.C. was Mr E. James and the music was supplied by Mr J. Edwards. A tasty supper was provided. During the evening the raffle was drawn, the proceeds of which, together with last night’s takings, are to be devoted to improving the hall. The successful ticket in the raffle was number 1489, which was held by Mr R. Rond. Personal. Miss Dora Moncrieff, of Wellington, is paying a visit to her parents for the weekend. It was mentioned at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club last evening that Mr Chas. Reid, a vice-president of the club, was not enjoying good health. The funeral of the late Mrs Elizabeth Suckling took place yesterday afternoon at the Clareville Cemetery when there was a large cortege. The many beautiful wreaths testified to the respect in which the deceased was held. The burial service was read by the Rev. R. S. Keenan, Presbyterian minister of Featherston. The pall-bear-ers were Messrs W. Yalden (brother of deceased), J. McPhun, J. Biggs, C. Biggs, A. Carstens (nephews), and W. Russell.

CARTERTON RACING. CLUB.

MONTHLY MEETING OF STEWARDS.

The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. rooms last evening. Mr W. Howard Booth presided and there were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart, Geo. H. Eaton, E. J. Matson, P. Bain, H. J. Brown, A. O. Abbott, J. C. Harp, R. J. Kemble, V. L. Robinson, G. A. Vincent, P. A. Cole and the secretary (Mr J. B. Bairstow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. C. Deller, J. Johnson and C. Reid. The treasurer reported that the receipts since last meeting had been £23 Is Bd. Accounts amounting to £4 Ils were passed for payment.

A letter was received from the South Wairarapa Trotting Club requesting the use of the Carterton racecourse for their meeting on Monday, December 26 and Saturday, February 25, 1939, and asking for a reduction of the charge. After discussion it was resolved that the use of the course be given to the club for the two days at the same fee as last year. The following officials were appointed for the annual race meeting on Saturday, March 11, 1939: —President, Mr W. Howard Booth; vice-presidents, Messrs C. Reid and L. H. Smart; hon. treasurer, Mr P. A. Cole; hon. judge, Mr J. W. Card; hon. clerk of scales, Mr W. C. Deller, assisted by Mr R. G. Kemble; hon. timekeeper, Mr E., J. Matson; hon. surgeons, Drs. R. N. Campbell, Budd and Oakey; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr S. Fletcher, 8.V.S.M.; clerk of the course, Mr F. Clancy; judicial committee, Messrs W. Howard Booth, L. H. Smart, and P. A. Cole; handicapper, Mr A. V. O’Brien; starter, Mr W. Price; stewards, Messrs A. O. Abbott, P. Bain, W. C. Deller, G. H. Eaton, J. C. Harp, C. Jensen, J. Johnson, R. G. Kemble, E. J. Matson, V. L. Robinson, H. J. Brown and Geo. A. Vincent. It was resolved that the same race programme as last year be carried into effect, the stakes amounting to £B5O for the eight races.
