I At Nashville seven guards and five convicts were wounded and one fugitive was killed during a spectacular break from the Tennessee Penitentiary, culminating in a wild gun battle in the city’s business section. Desperadoes overpowered four guards seized their guns. They then commandeered a lorry and forced Deputy-Warder C. Woods, and two assistants to accompany them as hostages. Police, who were soon in pursuit, .poured a volley of rifle, shotgun and machine gun fire into the lorry, unaware that guards were aboard. The battle continued until all the desperadoes had been shot down. One was found dead. Mr Woods was gravely injured, but the others not seriously.
