CHRISTMAS LAMB
HAWKE’S BAY SHIPMENT DELAYED ON ACCOUNT OF AUCKLAND HOLD UP (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, November 11. The shipping holdup in Auckland may mean that Hawke’s Bay lamb will arrive too late for the English Christmas market. The original arrangements were for the Rangitiki to begin loading at Napier next Monday and to complete on Thursday, November 17., sailing direct for London. The vessel was to be the only one to carry Hawke’s Bay lamb for'the English Christmas trade. :
Because of the Auckland holdup the Rangitiki arrived at Napier yesterday morning from Wellington and began loading in the afternoon. —five days ahead of schedule. Arrangement/ have been made for her to sail tomorrow night for Tokomaru Bay, where she will remain until Sunday or Monday. Whether the vessel will go on from there to Auckland or whether she will return direct to Napier is at present indefinite. A decision as to her future movements is entirely dependent upon the position of the Auckland waterfront. I
Under the original schedule the Rangitiki was due to reach London on December 20, which would have allowed sufficient time to put lamb in the market for the Christmas trade. Now it is regarded as unlikely that the Rangitiki will sail in time to unload before Christmas, unless the Auckland trouble continues and it is decided to sail without loading at Auckland. Lambs have been coming into both the Tomoana and Whakatu freezing works steadily this week, and are reported to have been killing out well up to Hawke’s Bay standards and better than generally expected earlier in the season..
