RETURN BLOW
CHINESE AT THE GATES OF CANTON GAINS MADE IN HEAVY FIGHTING. JAPANESE COMMUNICATIONS CUT. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) HONG KONG, November 8. The Chinese Southern Army has been reorganised and is again at the gates of Canton, heavy gunfire being audible in Hong Kong. The Chinese advance resulted in cuttng off a number of Japanese naval vessels up the river from Canton. The Japanese have rushed up all their reserves, which apparently are hopelessly outnumbered. The Chinese report the capture of Fatshan and also Poklo, seventy miles east of Canton, cutting the Japanese communications from Bias Bay. Heavy fighting continues. CHENGTU BOMBED > ONE JAPANESE PLANE SHOT DOWN. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) CHUNGKING, November 8. Chengtu, the capital of Szechwan Province and less than six hundred miles from the Soviet frontier, has been bombed for the first time since the Sino-Japanese war began. It was the last of the important rities which had not been bombed. Eighteen planes dropped a hundred bombs, one plane being shot down.
