PEACE & TOLERATION
MR CHURCHILL’S REPLY TO HERR HITLER NO WAR-MONGERS IN BRITAIN. MR GREENWOOD’S DENIAL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. November 7. Mr Winston Churchill, in his reply to Herr Hitler’s speech yesterday, said: “Herr Hitler is quite mistaken in supposing that Mr Anthony Eden, Mr Duff Cooper, myself, and the leaders of the Liberal and Labour Parties are war-mongers. Not one of Us has ever dreamed of an act of aggression against Germany. “We, however, are concerned to make sure that our own country is properly defended so that we can be safe and free and also help others to whom we are bound. Herr Hitler ought to understand this mood and respect it. “I ffiave always said that if Britain were defeated in war I hoped we should find a Hitler to lead us back to our rightful position among the nations. I am sorry, however, that he has not been mellowed by the great success that has attended him. “The .whole world would rejoice to see the Hitler of peace and tolerance, and nothing would adorn his name in world history so much as acts of magnanimity, mercy, pity for the forlorn, and friendliness to the weak and the poor.” In a later passage, Mr Churchill said: —“Let this great man search his own heart and conscience before he accuses anyone of being a war-mon-ger. The whole of the peoples of the British Empire and of the French Republic earnestly desire to dwell in peace side by side with the German nation. But they are also resolved to put themselves in a postion to defend their rights and their long-established civilisation. They do not mean to be in anyone’s power.” Mr Greenwood, deputy-leader of the Opposition, replying to Herr Hitler, denied ever saying that he wanted to see Italv and Germany destroyed.
RIBBENTROP’S VIEW. “NEW ARMAMENT FEVER.” BERLIN, November 8. Herr von Ribbentrop, Foreign Minister, addressing the foreign Press today, referred to the new armament fever in several nations. “We must, unfortunately, recognise that these warmongers are concerned lest Germany’s just demand for colonies may be fulfilled,” he said.
