CARTERTON

LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the dance and euchre tournament held in the Band Hall last Saturday night under the auspices of the social committee of the Carterton Labour Party. The music was supplied by Mr D. Te Tau and C. Ewertson, extras being played by Mr V. Boyde and Mr J. Blake. The Monte Carlo dance was won by , Miss T. Green and Mr A. Blake. The duties of M.C. was carried out by Mr L. Uprichard. The prizes in the card tournament were won as follow: —Ladies, Mrs W. Jensen 1, Mrs Miller 2. Men, Mr M. Ticehurst 1, Mr K. Hodder 2. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee, the members of which included Mesdames Lenihan, Benge, Green and Oberg. Personal. Mr J. Lenihan, who has lived for many years in Carterton, has taken up his residence at Upper Hutt. Boy Scouts Gathering. The weekly gathering of the Carterton Scout troop took place in Hadley’s Hall last night.' l There was a large attendance, and the interest that is being taken in the new corps should be the means of creating a strong body in Carterton again. The new Scoutmaster is Mr Don. Barclay, and at the present time he has a troop of over 30 members. Government Houses. Work on the two Government cottages at South 'Carterton, which was stopped for a time, is again being pushed on with, and the houses should be ready for occupation by Christmas. The work of connecting the buildings with the Cartdrton borough sewerage system is being carried out by borough workmen. It is to be hoped that now the road has been opened again that motorists will observe the danger lights connected with the same. Fruit Culture. Orchardists are hopeful that the good showing of fruit of all kinds this season will not be interfered with by heavy winds. At the present time there promises to be a plentiful supply of fruit. Peaches, plums, nectarines and other fruit trees are in heavy bearing. Carterton Cricket Team. The following team will represent Cai ertbn juniors against Masterton Odd Fellows on Carrington Park on Saturday:—Berry, Harp, Steffert (2), Ewng,’ Fitzgerald, Loader, Catt, Kennedy, Haste, Thompson. BOOTH CUP GAMES. LOCAL TEAMS SELECTED. Carterton will be represented by the following players in the Booth Cup and Shield games on Saturday next:— At Carterton. — Smith, Matson, Thompson, Riggs (s); Underhill, Williams, De Lacey, Barber (s). At Featherston. —Harrington, Kruse, Beale, G. Hart (s); W. Hart, W. Steven, Whyte, Sorensen (s). Shield game.—Boyne. Newbould, Harris, Hughan (s).
