A BAD RECORD

MAN ORDERED TO LEAVE NEW ZEALAND. BROUGHT BEFORE COURT IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “This man’s Australian record is one of assault and robbery and dope trafficking. He has a criminal nickname. In addition he has been convicted for pick-pocketing.” This was the description applied by the police to George Buckingham, an Australian, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient visible means of support. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within twelve months by Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., subject to his leaving for Australia. Buckingham, said Detective-Sergeant McClug, was of a type it was undesirable to have in the country. Accused, who gave his occupation as that of a salesman and showman, came from Australia and he was well known to the police over there. It would be in the interests of everybody for Buckingham to get out of the country, as he was certainly not of a type which was wanted in Christchurch.

“We certainly don't want you to come over here,” commented the Magistrate, after hearing a general account of accused’s character by DetectiveSergeant McClung. In the meanwhile he ordered Buckingham to report daily to the police. From the dock, the Australian said he was prepared to go to Australia, and he understood the police were ready to let him go.
