EXPORT LAMBS

NEW ZEALAND MEAT BOARD COMPETITION JUDGING AT WAINGAWA WORKS TODAY QUALITY OF ENTRIES GOOD There was a very large gathering of district farmers and others interested at the Waingawa Works, today to witness the judging of Wairarapa entries in the district export fat lamb competition, organised by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The Wairarapa has played a prominent part in the competition since its inception in 1931. After coming second to Wanganui in the first year, the Wairarapa was successful in winning the board’s challenge shield for the best district display at Home on fine occasions. Apart from its success in the district display, the Wairarapa has put up a remarkably good performance in that first prize for the best individual pen of lambs 'entered in the competition has been won by a Wairarapa breeder on six occasions. This morning the lambs were judged in the pens by Mr K. W. Deighton, of Marton. There were 49 entries, about the same as the number received last year. The awards were as follow: Wairarapa Training Farm, East Taratahi, 1. W. A. C. Perry, Penrose (Young Farmers’ Club member), 2. Cooper Bros, Gladstone, 3, R. R. Tilson, Papawai, 4. Commenting on the lambs, Mr Deighton said: “It is an excellent show and the lambs are the best I have seen this year. You could go a long way before you could find an exhibit containing such a large number of lambs typical of those required for the London trade. Great care must have been taken in the selection of the lambs.” This afternoon the lambs will be killed and then judged on the hooks by Mr W. Drysdale, Meat Board grader. Later 15 pens will be selected to represent the Wairarapa in the district display at Home. In addition to the Meat Board Shield for the best district group, prizes are offered as follow: —£3, £2 and £1 for the best three pens on the judging in the pens; £3, £2s and £1 for the best three pens judged on the hooks. Prizes have been donated by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, £lO, Sir Wm Perry £1 and Messrs Thos Borthwick and Sons £l. Diplomas will be issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board for the winner of first, second and third prizes for the whole of the North Island and to the owners of each of the 15 pens selected to be shipped to London. Cash prizes donated by the Meat Board of £l5, £lO and £5 will be awarded for the best three individual pens from the whole of the North Island, judged in London. The Chai--lenge Shield will be held for one year by the district winning best pen for whole of North Island. Breeders and others were entertainat morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea by Messrs Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. The competition this year is being controlled by the Wairarapa P. and A. Society and the secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, has all the detail arrangementswell in hand.
