YOUNG ATHLETES

WAIRARAPA COLLEGE SPORTS RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S EVENTS. OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES. There were a number of outstanding performances at the Wairarapa College sports gathering, held yesterday at the college grounds in fine sunny weather. Parents, friends and ex-pupils attended in large numbers and witnessed keen and exciting contests. Patrick retained the senior boys’ championship, securing 50 points. Brown, with 15J- points, was second and Stuart, 10 points, was third. Patrick collected nine cups. Hibbs, with 24 points, had a clear cut win in the intermediate championship. Stevenson, 8 points, was runner-up and then came Taylor, 7-J- points. The , junior championship was won by Harrington, 15 points, from Prior 10 points and Knutson, 8 points. Slatter, a promising boy, secured the under 14 championship with 19 points. Welch, 9 points, was runner-up and Alexander, 7 points, was third.

There was a spirited tussle for girls’ senior championship honours, Isabel Dale finally prevailing with 18 points from Joan Gemmell, 14 points. Pat Baskiville, 3 points, was third. Ngaire Richards, with 14 points, won the girls’ intermediate championship, with Marjorie Upston, 8 points, run-ner-up and Ruth Chorley, 6| points, third. The girls’ junior championship went to J. Staniforth with 15 points, Kathleen Ross and Olwyn Jones being equal second with 5 points.

Prior to the afternoon tea adjournment there was an impressive parade of the athletes headed by the College Pipe Band. At the conclusion of the events, the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, thanked the parents and others for attending, the ladies’ committee for providing afternoon tea, Mr J. W. Bird, and meffibers of the staff for their efficient organisation and control of the sports, and all the other officials.

The cups and trophies were then presented by Mrs W. R. Nicol, wife of the chairman of the College Board of Governors.
