ARCTIC KING WINS NEW ZEALAND CUP
RICCARTON CARNIVAL SPECTACULAR FINISH IN CUP. PAPER SLIPPER WINS STEWARDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 5. Racing on the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's New Zealand Cup meeting reached a high standard. The cup produced a thrilling finish, in which the Trentham-trained Arctic King scored by the narrowest of margins from The Buzzer. The Stewards’ Handicap was won by the favourite, Paper Slipper, who scored in the event two years ago. There was a surprise in store in the Welcome Stakes the undefeated Beaulivre being beaten, but it was not altogether the colt’s fault, his rider treating the situation over-confidently.
A misty rain fell in Christchurch early this morning, but the weather cleared in the forenoon, and although
overcast and chilly, the conditions were quite favourable for racing. The track remained in excellent order, evidence of which is provided by the Stewards’ Handicap winner, who ran the six furlongs against the wind in 1.11 1-5. The New Zealand Cup was a spectacular race and produced a great finish between the seventh favourite, Arctic King and the third favourite The Buzzer, the former prevailing by the narrowest of margins.
These two were two lengths clear of the Southlander, Milford, who ranged up menacingly in the last furlong and momentarily looked likely to win. Under pressure he bored in on The Buzzer checking him slightly. In the last half-furlong Arctic King and The Buzzer drew out, and in a terrific finish Arctic King, on the rails, got the verdict by the shortest of heads. The biggest dividend paid at Riccarton for .two years was returned by Toro Koura, owned by the Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, and Mr Hunter, M.L.C., in the Linwood Handicap. Only 79 win tickets were taken on Toro Koura’s chances but none was held by either of his owners.' Both Mr Webb and Mr Hunter had modest investments on the place machine. The only member .of Mr Hunter’s family to share the big win dividend was his son, George, who had 10s on the winner. The owners were confident that Toro Koura would be in a place and they advised many friends to back the horse for a place. Toro Koura returned the biggest dividend of any horse which has won under the colours of Messrs Webb and Hunter since they began their racing partnership 12 years ago.
