CARTERTON
GUN CLUB COMPETITIONS. SOME EXCELLENT SHOOTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Members of the newly-formed Carterton Gun Club at the weekend held three sweepstake competitions. About a dozen members took part and some excellent shooting was shown, especially by several young members, who promise to make first-rate shooters Each was a nine-clay bird match. The first match ended in a tie between Randal Williams, L. Lyddington and G. S. George. In the'shoot-off George dropped out after firing three shots. Williams went on for nine kills before he missed, leaving Lyddington, from 11 yards, the winner, gaining five birds with the first barrel and four with the second.
Lyddington (14 yards) won the second sweepstake, getting 3 birds with the first barrel and six with the second. Rex Walker (11yds) and Randal Williams (13yds) tied for second place, missing 2 birds each. Thi third sweepstake was won by lan Sutherland, who gained a possible, seven birds with the first barrel and 2 with the second. Walker (11yds) and Williams (13yds) were runners-up again. Road Widening. A ; gang of men under the control of the Public Works Department has commenced the widening of the road near the Taratahi racecourse. The trees are being removed, preparatory to the bend being taken off the main road at the junction of Hughes Line. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Walter Moroney, of Cai'terton, are spending a holiday in Gisborne. Mr G. Minns, at one time resident of Carterton, and now of the Auckland Post Office staff, was a visitor to Carterton on Saturday. He is motoring to Auckland with a friend by way of Napier and Gisborne. Mr E. J. Lenihan, who has been in the employ of Mr G. W. Busby at Waingawa for some years, will leave this week to take up another occupation at Lower Hutt. The many friends in Carterton of Mr Jas. Adamson, at one time in business in Featherston, will regret to hear he is seriously ill and now an inmate of Lewisham Hospital, Wellington. Mr Barr, of the Public Trust Office, Carterton, accompanied by Mrs Barr and children, will leave this week for three weeks’ holiday to be spent in Oamaru v . Government Cottages. The successful tenants for the new Government cottages in Kent Street, Carterton, will take up their residence in their new homes in three weeks. Guy Fawkes Day. Carterton residents, particularly the younger generation, will for a long time remember Guy Fawkes Day in 1938. For weeks past both boys and girls have been arranging their “guys” for the parade that took place in High Street on Saturday and there were some excellent representations. In the morning Feist & Co. awarded three prizes, and every boy and girl parading a “guy” received some recognition. Mr Coulspn was called upon to act as judge and made his awards as under: D. Chew and A. Simmonds 1, McKenzie 2, Banks 3.
During the afternoon a very large number of people assembled at Carrington Park where the Mayoress (Mrs D. L. Taverner) and Mrs P. A. Cole had the task of judging the various “guys.” They awarded the first prize to Masters Allan Simmonds and Deizel Chew, whose, exhibit represented Guy FaWkes being hanged to a lamp post. The second prize was awarded to Masters Jim Callender and Lewis Patterson and the third went to Master Bruce Balfour. A procession was then formed and paraded to the Tivoli Theatre where the prizes were awarded. At night time large numbers of boys and girls celebrated the occasion by bonfires and fireworks displays in vacant sections away from the business area. BOWLING. NUMBER OF GAMES PLAYED. Five rinks were occupied’ on the Carterton bowling green on Saturday and although the green was heavy after the continued rain it played very presided over by Mesdames Barr and Hawker and the bowlers appreciated their efforts. Hughan (sj 20; Lynch, Robertson, Barr (5)..13. ’CRICKET MATCH. CARTERTON BEAT ODD FELLOWS All junior cricket on Saturday, owing to the groundsmen being unable to prepare the wickets, was declared off. However, the Masterton Odd Fellows journey to Carterton and played a friendly game with Carterton, and in a one innings game suffered defeat by four wickets and 135 runs. for 32, Berry 1 for 19, Steffert 1 for 24, Kennedy 1 for 7, Harp 1 for 5. Carterton will play Odd Fellows in an association competition match at Carterton next Saturday. LAD INJURED. THROWN FROM A HORSE. A lad named James, who was riding a horse at South Carterton on Saturday, was thrown from his mount and sustained a broken collarbone. He was attended to by Dr. Budd and taken to the Masterton Hospital for treatment. COLLISION IN CARTERTON. TWO CARS BADLY DAMAGED. Two cars came into collision -n Saturday evening in High Street,.Carterton, with the result that they were both badly damaged. Mr B. J. Whitburn was travelling north and a '.ar owned by Mr W. Denbee and driven by Mr Clem. Manley, accompanied by Mrs Manley and Mr Denbee, was travelling south. Just as Mr Whitburn was passing the Community Store someone from a car stationed on the kerbside, it is stated threw a large lighted cracker at his car and in endeavouring to miss it he swerved slightly to the eastern side of the road and a collision occurred with Mr Denbee’s car, with the result that both vehicles were badly damaged and had to be taken to garages for repairs. The accident soon drew the attention of a large number of people. For some time the traffic was to a certain extent congested and was directed by the police, who were early on the scene. No injury was received by the occupants of either car. It is alleged that the owner of the car from which the fireworks were being thrown drove away but the number of his car was taken and the police have the matter in hand.
MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED. VICTIM TAKEN TO HOSPITAL. When Mr Stanley Jensen, son of and Mrs F. Jensen, of Brooklyn Road, Carterton, was riding along the main road north on his motor cycle on Friday afternoon, following behind Mr Martin Smith’s bus, he had the misfortune to run into the rear of the bus. It appears that someone hailed the bus to stop and Mr Jensen, not realising what was going to happen. ran into the back of the bus with the result that he was thrown heavily to the ground. He was badly shaken and when Dr Budd arrived and examined the unfortunate lad he ordered his removal to the Masterton Hospital. The motor cycle was badly damaged.
