CARTERTON

• HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. OPERATIONS SUSPENDED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Carterton Horticultural Society was held in the P. and A. Rooms on Thursday night, the president, Mr W. H. Booth, being in the chair. After fully discussing the annual balance, which disclosed a loss on the year’s working, it was decided that the Society go into recess for twelve months. It was pointed out that public support was waning, although good exhibitions were benched. A committee consisting of Messrs A. Tankersley, E. H. Hawker and F. B. Knutson was appointed to call a meeting in July next to consider the question of recommencing operations. The secretary was instructed to deposit all funds in the Post Office Savings Bank. No officers were elected. It is a pity that the Society has gone into recess as Carterton has always been noted for its excellent horticultural shows. It is hoped that fresh life will be infused into the affairs of the Society and that it will soon function again. Personal. Mr J. G. Stevens, of Wellington, is spending'q few days with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs W. S. Hill. Wakelin Street. Boy Scouts. For some time past Carterton hasbeen without a Scout Troop, though under the control of the Misses Edge the flag has been kept flying by a Cub Pack. A number of these Cubs have now' reached the Scout age and to cater for them ana others a citizen’s committee has been established to foster scouting interest in the town. Several meetings have been held and the committee have secured the use of Messrs Hadley Bros.’ Hall' in Broadway to accommodate the troop and pack. A troop, about 30 strong, will be under the command of Mr Don Barclay, who will give the boys the benefit of his Wellington scouting experience, assisted by Messrs J. Vernon, R. O’Keefe and E. Thompson as assistant scoutmasters. The members of the committee are the Rev. H. White, Mesdames C. E. White, W. A. Pinfold, Barclay, Walsh, Vennel. Messrs Finn, Wakelin, Keale, Pinfold, White, N. Walsh (secretary)*, and C. W. Gaze (chairman). Efforts are being made to put the organisation on a sound financial footing and with this in view a public social gathering is planned for Saturday evening, November 19.
