Wonder Lamp.

Chicago has what is believed to be the most powerful lamp in the world. Its beam is so strong and brilliant that passengers in an aeroplane were able recently to read newspapers by its light 27 miles away. The light can be seen 100 miles off, and it is reported that even 140 miles away the lamp may be detected, shining like a star.

A Problem for the Church. “One of the problems confronting cur church courts at the present time is tiic stationary character of church attendance in the face of the steadily increasing poulation,” said ihe Rev W. H. Howes, retiring Moderator of ihe Presbyterian Church, at the incuPural session in First Church, Dunedin, of the General Assembly. “The position represents a challenge to the Church, and we will have to face it; but I would like to emphasise that there is no need for a defeatist attitude in this regard The hope of the Church is in youth, and by strengthening the youth work of our church, we can hope to make that progress which should be our goal. Mr Howes said that although new admissions to church by profession of faith during the year had been more than 2300, the increase in membership of the Presbyterian Church throughout New Zealand had been not more than 200 or 300.
