FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS LAMB [MARKET DEPRESSED GOOD DEMAND FOR BEEF Lamb market: Heavy supplies of killed continue to depress the market. New Zealand prime lamb still selling above best quality home-killed, but our consumption naturally affected. Mutton market: Wethers and ewes, trade remains slow, with prices easier. Beef market: Frozen beef, meeting with good demand; chilled beef, with lighter supplies prices are firmer for the best quality. New Zealand porker pigs: Lightweights easier with slow trade. New Zealand baconer pigs: Prices unchanged, but tendency is easier.
This report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. Prices for‘the previous week are shown in parentheses:— New Zealand sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 4,,d (4Sd); 491 b to 561 b, 4gd (4-|d); 571 b to 641 b, 4Jd (4gd); 651 b to 721 b, 4gd (4gd). Ewes, 481 b and under, 3d (3|d); 491 b to 561 b, 2Jd (2gd); 571 b to 641 b, 2fd (2gd) 651 b to 721 b, 2|d (2Jd). New Zealand lambs: Canterbury, 361 b and under, 7gd (7gd); 371 b to 421 b, 7gd (7gd); 431 b to 501 b, not quoted (7Jd); second quality, average about 311 b, 6gd (6gd). Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated November 3: —Frozen meat quotations (prices on a ’’delivered” basis, i.e., including storage charges, cartage, market toffs, X;tc): —Best North Island xbd lambs, 28/361bs, 7gd per lb; 36/421bs, 7 5-8 d
per lb. North Island 2nd quality lambs, av. 30/311bs, 6£d per lb. Best North Island wether sheep, under 48Jb, 4Jd; 48/561bs 4 3-8 d; 56/641bs 4 3-8 d; 64/721bs, 4 3-8 d per lb. North Island ewes, under 481bs, 3d; 48/56, 2?d; 56/64, 25-8 d; 64/72, 2£d per lb. Compared with last week’s quotations 2nd quality lamb was 1-8 per lb lower; wethers under 561bs l-8d per lb lower; ewes under 481 bs l-8d per lb lower. Others unchanged. The market is quiet all round. Prices where changed are in buyers’ favour.
