STOCK MARKET
MARTINBOROUGH CATTLE FAIR. GOOD PRICES REALISED. Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report as follows: —We held our annual fair at Martinborough yesterday when an entry well up to advertised numbers was submitted to a very good attendance. The recent rains experienced in the Wairarapa had a hardeni?gg effect on the market and prices generally were very good. Grown bullocks were in keen demand and the number of cattle offered in this section did not nearly fulfil the demand. Young cattle sold well but did not appreciate in value as much as the grown cattle. Very few cows and heifers were offered. Fats sold at late rates. The following are prices:—A/c W. Coleman, 3-yr. bullocks, £9 2s to £lO 13s; S.H. steers, £7 6s; 2-yr. steers, £6 14s; a/c R. McLeod, 3-yr. bullocks, £lO 8s; a/c B. H. G. Hewitt, fat cows, £8 to £8 15s; other vendors, fat bullocks, £l3 6s; fat cows (dairy), £4 10s to £5 3s; yearling P.A. steers, £4 6s; yearling P.A. heifers, £3 6s; store cows (dairy), £2 6s to £3 Bs.
CARTERTON SALE.
KEEN COMPETITION FOR PIGS.
Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report as follow: —We held our weekly sale at Carterton yesterday when a fairly big entry of all classes of stock was offered to a good attendance. Sheep met with fair competition, but prices were not up to those ruling at our last sale. Springing cows, and heifers were in demand, but anything lacking quality was not wanted. Fat and store cows sold well. Baconer and porker pigs met with keen competition and weaners also sold at increased rates. We offered several horses on behalf of Mr R. W. Sharp which sold exceptionally well, making up to £2B. The following are prices realised:-—
Sheep: Ewes with lambs at foot (all counted), Ils, Ils 9d to 15s 7d; ewe hoggets, 21s Id, 21s sd, 24s 3d, 25s 6d, 28s 7d to 295; shorn hoggets, to 16s 6d: fat maiden ewes and wethers, to 19s 9d. Cattle: Jersev heifers on drop, £7 to £9; Holstein heifers on drop, £8 to £9 ss; springing Jersey heifers, £6 to £7 12s 6d; yearling Jersey and JerseyAyrshire cross heifers, £4 to £4 12s; fat cows, £5 to £6 Is; forward cows, £3 10s to £4 12s 6d; store cows, £2 Is to £2 16s; cull cows, 20s to 355; cows and calves, £4 10s to £6; potter bulls, £4 17s 6d to £5. Pigs: Weaners (good), 23s to 265; weaners (medium), 19s to 22s 6d; weaners (small), 16s 6d to 18s 6d; slips, 26s 6d to 28s; store pigs, 29s to 30s; light porkers, 32s to 38s; porkers, 39s to £2 16s; baconers, to £3 18s.
