GREYTOWN

93rd BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr Carl Jensen, of Greytown, celebrated his 93rd birthday yesterday. Mr Jensen arrived in New Zealand on the Lumbesshagen in 1875, and has resided in the Wairarapa ever since. His wife died two years ago and he now resides with his daughter, Mrs A. Morris. Mr Jensen retains all his faculties, except that he is a little hard of hearing. He was the recipient of many congratulatory messages and good wishes. Personal. Mr and Mrs F. C. Bunny left last night on a holiday to be spent at Christchurch. Mrs J. Dockery, of Jellicoe Street, is at present in the Greytown Hospital. Mrs R. Workman, wife of the custodian of the Working Men’s Club, is also a patient in the Greytown Hospital. Bowling. There will be no play on the Greytown Green on Saturday. Owing to the wet weather it has been impossible for any work to be done bn the green. Trotting Club Meeting. At the monthly meeting of stewards of the Wairarapa Trotting Club there were present Messrs P. C. Bunny (chairman), G. A. Vincent, G. McKenzie, A. O. Abbott, H. J. Brown, W> J. Fitzgerald, J. E. Raison, R. R. Tilson, Ben Sewell, J. Wilson, R. W. Beu and J. McNamara. Apologies were received from Messrs J. F. Thompson, F. W. Smith, R. Gallon and T. McKenzie. A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Hon A. D. McLeod.

A letter was received from the New Zealand Trotting Conference in respect of the petition being circulated for presentation to Parliament—(l) For the legalising of the double totalisator; (2) directing “off course” investments through the legalised channel —the totalisator; (3) publication of dividends. — It was resolved to support clauses 1 and 3.

The secretary submitted an estimate for the December meeting, which was adopted with the addition that a trophy of a trotting sulky be added to the Wairarapa Trotting Cup Handicap. The programme for the meeting on December 26 was approved. It was decided that tenders be called for the following privileges: —Tea rooms and hot water; ice cream, soft drinks and cigarettes; publican’s booth (2 booths).

Admission charges for the meeting were fixed at: Men, ss; ladies, 2s. It was resolved to have the totalisator displaying totals invested on each horse instead of displaying the dividends.

The chairman referred’ to the fact that the President was laid aside with illness and on his motion it was decided that a letter be sent to Mr Thompson expressing the hope for a speedy recovery.
