MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB.
SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL BALL.
(“Times-Age” Special.)
The ninth annual ball of the Martinborough Miniature Rifle Club was held last night,at the Town Hall. There was a splendid attendance, visitors being present from various other clubs in the Wairarapa. The decorations, which were carried out by the club committee, looked very effective. The walls and front of the stage were decorated in different shades of pink, japonica, the lamp shades were of orange with crossed rifles and with the initials M.M.R.C. on them. At the back of the stage was a moon and an owl sitting in position. Udy’s Orchestra supplied the music. Streamers, snowballs and balloons were a feature of the function.
Euchre was played by non-dancers, the winners of which were: Ladies: Mrs Johns 1-, Mrs Whitehead 2. Men: Mr A. McArdle 1, Mr F. Holland 2. After the euchre playing was finished and before supper was served the prizes won during the year were presented by Mr Amos, the club’s president, after which Mr Skill was called upon to make a special presentation to Mrs Davidson. Mr Skill said that Mrs Davidson had been an especially valuable member of the club and he had much pleasure indeed in making the presentation. Mrs Davidson suitably replied. Cheers were then given for Mrs Davidson and Mr Skill. The list of prize-winners is as follows:—Club championship, D. Flynn (trophy donated by the club); runnerup, W. George (donor, E. Findlay). Ladies’ championship, Mrs Dempsey (M. N. Hardie). B grade championship, Mrs Boyd (S. Harvey). Junior championship, M. Marflitt (the club). Club handicap aggregate, K. Wright (the club). Open handicap aggregate, D. Flynn (W. Bain). Davidson Challenge Cup and miniature, E. Feist (the club). Weekly button, D. Wilton (Mrs Dempsey.) Monthly trophies: May, D. Flynn and C. Chapman. (donors, Mrs Davidson and Miss Smith); June, D. Flynn and 'M. Marflitt (the club and R. Ames); July, R. Amos and M. Marflitt (the club and Mrs Boyd); August, W. Bain and J. Turner (the club and A. Flynn); September, Jock and C. Skill (the club and K. Wright); September consolation trophy, V. Amos (donated by C. Skill). Women’s Institute. The Parish Hall was tastefully decorated with bowls of beautiful flowers, chiefly blue and gold, for the tenth birthday party on Thursday afternoon. Mrs J. Lamb presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. Shoulder sprays were presented to the visiting institute members from Dyerville, Parkvale, Kaituna, Fernridge and Pirinoa. Greetings were received from the Kahautara branch.
A much-appreciated musical programme was presented by the following: Miss C. Taylor (piano accordion), Mrs T. Boyd (songs), Mary McGillicuddy and Peggy Mclntosh (Dutch dance), Merle Cook (dance), Mary Chisholm (dance).
Aftei afternoon tea had been provided the canoTes on the birthday cake were lit by Mrs McAlpine and extinguished by Mrs S. Boyd. The cake was cut by Mrs J. Lamb. Competitions were won by Mesdames Tilyard, Knell, Blackwell, McPherson and Miss C. Taylor. The antirrhinum cup was won by Mrs Telfor, with Mrs Lamb second.
A very pleasant gathering concluded with the National Anthem.
A children’s party is to be held at Mrs S. Boyd’s residence on Friday, November 25, commencing at 3.30 p.m.
