MANAWATU SHOW
OPENING DAY*.
CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., November 3.
Sullen and wet weather prevailed in the morning for the first day of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association's fiftythird annual spring show, which was opened at the showgrounds, Palmerston North, by the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, this afternoon. Steady rain fell all night, brought by a cold southerly wind, and continued intermittently throughout the day. The wind changed to the north later in the morning, and temperatures became much warmer, with a few bursts of sunshine. Conditions under foot were wet and muddy, but were improving. For this reason attendances were low. Total entries at this show reached 2566, which is a fairly big decrease on
the total for 1936. This is accounted for mainly by the fact that school classes this year have been arranged on a different basis, and instead of several hundred entries being received classes have been arranged on a noncompetitive basis. Nevertheless, a splendid display has resulted. A summary of entries is as follows: Competitions, 334; horses, 237; cattle, 309; sheep, 392; pigs, 169; art and fancy needlework, 190; home industries, 328; photography, 107; Manawatu Kennel Club, 500; total, 2566. , The following are the championship awards made today:— HORSES. CONCLUDING DAY ATTRACTIONS FOR TOMORROW For the concluding day of the Mana - watu Show tomorrow a carnival programme has been drawn up with the proclamation of “Miss New Zealand ip the evening as one of the principal items. Commencing in the morning and continuing in the afternoon the shearing contest for the championship of New Zealand under the auspices of the Young Farmers’ Clubs will prove a great attraction. With an entry of 89 this competition will eclipse anything of the kind previously seen in the Dominion, and prove an education to many of the townspeople and a number cf country people, on account of the large scale on which it will be conducted. Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Young Farmers’ Clubs so that the event can be watched by all those interested. In the afternoon the six finalists in the “Miss New Zealand” beauty contest will be drawn on specially decorated floats by teams of business girls from the Square to the Oval. The Garrison Band, the City Band and the Highland Pipe Band will take part in the procession. The same procedure will be followed in the evening prior to the proclamation of the name of the successful candidate., Voting in this competition will close with the secretary of the A. and P. Association at 5 o clock in the afternoon. Trotting and cycling races have also been set down for the afternoon, with additional trotting races in the evening, when there will be a gymnastic dislay by the Y.M.C.A. and quickstep exhibition by the bands.
