GOLF
LOCKE AT MIRAMAR. FOURBALL IN THE RAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The opportunity of seeing Bobby Locke, the world-renowned South African professional golfer, .in action attracted a gallery of about 150 to the Miramar links, Wellington, yesterday afternoon, despite persistent rain from the south. The visitor partnered J. D. Mclntosh against A. J. Shaw and R. C. Butters, all Wellington professionals, in a fourball match over 18 holes. The captain of the Miramar Golf Club, Mr D. R. Richmond, acted as referee. Though he was playing on the links for the first time, Locke played good golf to cover the course in 73, one under the standard scratch score. With a delightfully easy swing, the South African kept excellent direction, and his high pitches to the green were marked by singular accuracy and frequently enabled him to get down in one putt. It was mainly due to Locke’s steadiness that he and his partner were 2 up at the turn. The South African was the only player of the quartet to get a bogey 5 at the third (456 yards). Locke did the out journey in 37. Butters and Mclntosh took 39, and Shaw 40.
Mclntosh played brilliant golf to do the home journey in 33, which gave him 72 for the round.
Locke came home in even 4's, which made his full round 73. The match was all over on the thirteenth. green, where Locke and Mclntosh won by 6 up and 5 to play. Locke left for the south by steamer express last night, and will play an exhibition match on the Shirley links in Christchurch today.
