CENTENNIAL PLANS

THE WELLINGTON MEMORIAL COMMITTEE CONSTITUTED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Suggestions for centennial memorials for Wellington are to be considered by a special committee appointed by a public meeting held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall yesterday. The committee will meet on Friday week. The deputy-mayor, Mr M. F. Luckie, presided over a representative gathering. The personnel of the committee is as follows:—Mr Luckie, representing the Wellington City Council; Mr C. Mclntyre, New Zealanders’ Association and Early Settlers’ Association; Mr J. H. Phillipps, sports bodies; Mrs Knox Gilmer; women’s organisations; Mr O. J. Howarth, educational organisations; Captain S. S. Holm, Wellington Beautifying Society. The harbour board, the Automobile Association (Wellington) and the chamber of commerce have yet to appoint representatives. Two more suggestions for memorials were made at the meeting. The first, sponsored by Mr W. Duncan, was that tepid baths should be erected. The other, put forward by Mr R. L. Macalister, was that the southern portion of Porirua harbour should be reclaimed and turned into a large city park. Mr Luckie said that the latter suggestion really came with the purview of the provincial committee.
