CROWD STUNNED
BY CATALOGUE’S WIN A LESSON IN GALLOPING. NEW ZEALAND HORSE'MAKES HISTORY. SYDNEY, This Day. The “Herald’s” Melbourne correspondent commenting on the Melbourne Cup says: “Catalogue stunned the crowd at Flemington by winning the ’Cup with ease. The sole credit for his preparation rests with Mrs McDonald. Catalogue is the oldest horse to win the Cup for seventy-three years. The only other successful eight-year-old horse was Tory Boy which won in 1856. Catalogue created history by carrying saddlecloth number five to victory for the first time in the Cup. Catalogue gave his younger opponents a lesson in galloping. From three furlongs onward the race lacked excitement as it was apparent that Catalogue could not be beaten. Bourbon, who came from a long way back, may have had a chance had he been brought along sooner, but against that Catalogue was never really extended and his reaction to a challenge could not be estimated. Shean the rider of Catalogue, said that Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle all the way and was going so well that he never had any doubt that he would win. Royal Chief, the favourite, never appeared to be going like a winner. Bartie, his rider, said that the slow pace was against his mount. Catalogue’s time was five seconds outside the race record.”
CATALOGUE TO RACE AGAIN ON SATURDAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 2. Catalogue came to no harm in the Melbourne Cup, and will run either in the V.R.C. Handicap or the Fisher Plate on Saturday. Nuffield is slightly sore, and will hot race again until the autumn. The Trump will be given a long spell. The only other eight-year-old horse to win the Melbourne Cup was Tory Boy in 1865. Nimblefoot, Sheet Anchor, Tarcoola and Acrasia. all seven-year-olds, were the only other aged winners. Comrade and Libra were fatally injured in falls at Ascot totday. The jockey, E. Preston, suffered a broken collarbone, and W. Williamson abrasions.
