SOVEREIGN LADY WORKING WELL

(By •'

“The Cynic.”)

Sovereign Lady has been working well and she may be responsible for some good form during Cup week. She may not be seen to advantage early in proceedings, as she has not had a race since August, and she will not have had one before the opening of the meeting. Asked to place a price on this mare recently, Mr G. Murray-Aynsley replied that she is not for sale. Sovereign Lady is the only representative the well-knowm owner-breeder has in training at present. Mr Aynsley, who,, by the way, has been confined to his home more or less for the last eight or nine months, now looks much better than he did two or three months back, and he may soon be regularly about again to see his horses work and race. As he explained, he- would not have sold Disdain, Rebellion and Lecture had he been able to get about as he wished.

Breeding of Moneymore. The only youngster remaining in the field for the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton who/does not figure in the Stud Book is Moneymore. However, this alone does not rule out his chance, for quite often horses who are inadmissible to the Stud Book make a name for themselves on the race track. Sly Fox is such a case during the past few weeks. Moneymore is a chestnut gelding by Cockpit from Sestu, who was by Balboa from Guzark, by Nantiform from Petrovna. Sestu did not race, but Guzark (whose name has generally been spelt Guizark, though it was not registered that way) did some racing a couple of decades ago and won two small hack events in Central Otago. At the stud she got numerous horses, but none of them of any particular account. One of her daughters, however, the Tractor mare Tractrix, has bred a couple of useful recent winners in Contact and Diana Tetrix. Moneymore is held on lease by the Wingatui trainer F. Shaw, and in his first and only start to date he ran second to Dark Flight on the final day of the Dunedin meeting.

Progress of Airam. Little has been heard of Airam since being placed on the schooling list, but it may not be long before she is tried as a hurdler. Now a four-year-old, she had been kept going practically throughout her first two seasons, and the respite she has had since last July may stand her in good stead. She gave evidence of stamina in her. outings in handicap events last term, and will need to jump to make good.

f Royal Star 11. The imported horse Royal Star 11.. who had his last races among the hacks at the recent Wellington meeting, looks none the worse for his hard battle with Punarua last Monday; indeed. if anything, he looks improved. His first race at Riccarton will probably be in the Epsom Handicap, 1 mile, on the second day, and he is also in the Avon Handicap. 6 furlongs, on the third day, and in the Members’ Handicap, 6 furlongs, and the Cressy Handicap. 1 mile, on the final day.

A Promising Youngster. Benevolent, who finished fifth after being prominent over the first halfmile in the O’Kains Trial Stakes at Motukarara, is an exceptionally well grown two-year-old colt by Beau Pere from Dignified, who was purchased at the national yearling sales last January by Dr M. G. Louisson for 650 gns. At the time of the sale his hocks did not appeal to buyers, but after a few months' training they have improved a lot in looks, and they do not impair his action, when galloping He showed pace in Saturday’s race, his first outing in public, but looks more like making a good three yeai’old than a Welcome Stakes candidate, as already he-stands nearly 16 hands. His dam, Dignified, is by Dignity vby Gainsborough) from Queen Warbler by Comedy King from Yippingdale. At the Stud. Mr G. J. Barton has sold Desert Jewel, half-sister to' Desert Chief and Gold Trail, to a stud in Australia?'Gold Trail, winner of the Auckland Cup, has foaled a chestnut colt to Mr T. H. Lowry’s Fairview stallion, Tiderace. Sly Fox. Sly Fox, who is one of the fancied lot for the New Zealand Cup, started eight times as a three-year-old, winning one race. . His two-year-old record is four starts without finishing in a place. Sly Fox, however, gave evidence of training on as a three-year-old, as he followed three unplaced performances by a third over eight furlongs and a-half in the Waipa Hack Cup. At the Wellington winter meeting Sly Fox started second favourite in the Trial Plate and finished second to Shining Hours in heavy going. On the third day of the meeting he got the stakes of the Novice Handicap owing to the winner, Bluffer, being ineligible. This season Sly Fox, after two unplaced performances, scored a win, and since has scored four wins, a second, and once unplaced. He won in his last three starts. Narrow Defeats. . .. . : Beaupartir has been beaten .into second place in the three races he has had to date, but they have been narrow defeats, and he is probably the most likely maiden at present racing. The Spring Plate at Riccarton will be his next engagement. In this he will have 7.7 and will meet a strong opponent in Disdain, whose weight will be 7.2. Jumpers ip Action. Top Rank and Mount Vai gave a fast display together over’ four hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. The latter ran a good race in the big event at Motukarara on Saturday, and as he has been successful over hurdles, he can be expected to play an important part in Saturday’s event. Redolent and Sir Rosenor had •la similar task, both jumping fast and cleanly. Chanteur and Supreme Court had some more education over the poriy hurdles. The latter shows distinct promise.

May Make Amends. Sergia appeared to be unlucky to be headed by Rona Bay at the Waikato Hunt fixture at Cambridge and if the Whangarei trip is undertaken she will be in keen demand in the Cup event there the first day. She came through her Labour Day exertions in splendid heart and it will not be on the score of condition if she fails to show to advantage in engagements ahead. Death of Tidalia. Advice has been received by Mr Gerald Stead that Tidalia, whom he bought on behalf of a Fijian client, died at Suva recently. While at Suva she won several races. She was by Tidal from March, and therefore came from the same family as Te Kara, Queen March, King March, Gay Marigold and others. Prospect for Cup. Happy Landing, winner of the Carnarvon Gold Cup at Foxton, fourth in the Mitchelson Cup, and second in the Wellington Handicap, is proving himself a sound stayer who should have excellent prospects in the New Zealand Cup. But for splitting a plate a furlong and a half from home, Happy Landing might have won the Wellington Handicap. Solid Family Lines. An addition to Mrs J. Campbell’s team at Riccarton is a three-year-old colt by Martarma from Wartone, by Solferino from Warstep. He was bred by Mr B. G. Dalgety, but is now owned by Mr D. McFarlane, who also has Night Hawk in the same stable. Two Mishaps. Financiere was an absentee from' the Riccarton tracks yesterday owing to a heel injury caused by being interfered with when she was sent back nearing the straight entrance in her race at Motukarara. The trouble was caused by two other horses coming over on to her, and she narrowly escaped being put over the fence. Provided she makes a good recovery, she will be raced on the third and fourth days of the Cup meeting.-Night Hawk, Who also went back earlier in this race, stumbled through putting his foot in a depression in the track, and he, too, nearly had a fall.
