CARTERTON

PERSONAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr Russell Goodwin, of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, returned to Carterton on Monday after having spent his annual leave in Palmerston North Mr Percy Hodder, of Lincoln Road, Carterton, successfully underwent an operation at Croydon Hospital yesterday morning. He is at present under medical care at his home. Mr Neville R. Armstrong has again found it necessary to enter the Masterton public hospital for further treatment. His many friends will wish for him a speedy recovery. Parson Birds. At the home of a farmer in Lincoln Road, Carterton, yesterday, there were to be seen a pair of beautiful tuis. They were seen close to the back part of the residence, and were quite content seeking the nectar from the flowers of a kowhai tree. The beautiful song of the birds was a treat to hear. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics recorded at the Carterton Post Office in October were: Births, 9; deaths, 2; marriages, 2. Melbourne Cup. There was much interest and excitement in Carterton last evening in connection with the Melbourne Cup and wireless sets were much used by list-eners-in. Most people could not be shaken from their fancy, Royal Chief, but the Palmerston North-owned Catalogue was not a surprise to many followers of racing. The win will be a popular one in New Zealand racing circles.

Shearing Operations. Shearing is becoming fairly general throughout the district, and already loads of this year's fleece can be seen on their way to the city. Guy Fawkes. Already the advent of Guy Fawkes is being announced and rockets and other squibs were set off by juveniles last evening. If the present indications can be taken as any criterion, Saturday next will be a lively day. It is hop.ed those taking part in the celebrations will not indiscriminately set off their fireworks. It is understood that there will be some rivalry in the matter of “guys”' in Carterton and a prize is being offered for the best one. ' 'Social Security. On Monday evening a member of Wairarapa Manchester Unity Odd Fellows journeyed to Wellington to attend a meeting in the Britannia, Lodge Room, Clyde Quay, for the purpose of listening to the Grand Secretary of the Order deliver an address on the Government’s Social Security Act. He was accorded a vote of thanks for his address. Bro. A. G. Shrimpton has intimated his intention of delivering a similar address to M.U. Odd Fellows at Greytown on Thursday, November 10. This matter is of vital importance to Friendly Societies and it is hoped there will be a large attendance at this gathering. Renovation. Painters are busy at the moment painting the roof of the State Theatre and the -ißand Room in Holloway Street. Both places are the property of the Carterton Borough Council.
