CHINA’S DEFENCE
DEFENCE BASE IN VAST HINTERLAND DECLARATION BY CHIANG KAI-SHEK NATION-WIDE WARFARE IN PROSPECT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) CHUNGKING, November 1. Marshal Chiang Kai-Shek, in a manifesto to the nation, said China’s main base of resistance lay in her vast hinterland. The defence of Hankow and Wuchang had been deliberately prolonged in order to allow time for the development of inland resources and communications. This had been completed. Therefore a plan for nationwide warfare, instead of fighting at particular points can be carried out. “Irrespective of changes in the international situation,” the Generaissimo said, “Japan must collapse from exhaustion. China’s supplies are adequate and there is no danger of the communications being cut.”
