OBITUARY

MR JAMES WALKER. The death occurred at his residence, 98 Bannister Street, Masterton, today of one of the best known residents of Masterton in the person of Mr James Walker. The late Mr Walker was engaged in business in Masterton as a carrier for a long period of years and took a keen interest in the progress of the town, being associated with a number of local institutions on all of which he rendered splendid service. The progress made in late years by the Wairarapa Caledonian Society in particular was largely due to the work carried out by Mr Walker as president for many years .and as a director. The interests of the local carrying trade received his closest attention and in this sphere his business knowledge was of great value. He was appointed some time ago to a national committee which held an enquiry into transport matters as related to taxis and the carrying business generally. He was a prominent member of 'the local Unemployed Committee and an official of the Masterton ’branch of the Labour Party. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows and Druids’ lodges, and had been president of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Chib and the Wairarapa subcentre. ’He took a keen interest also in football and cricket. The late Mr Walker was born in Edinburgh 65 years ago and was married there. He came to New Zealand 33 years ago and took up his residence in Masterton almost immediately. He was a citizen held in the highest esteem, arftl his jovial nature made for him many firm friends. He leaves a widow, on ■ -on (Mr F. Walker, Bruce Bay, Hokitika) and one daughter (Mrs R. J. Grant, Nursery Road, Masterton), to whom the deepest sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The funeral will leave 98 Bannister Street at 2 p.m. on Friday for the Masterton Cemetery.

Owing to the death of Mr J. Walker, the euchre party and dance which was to have been held in the Y.M.C.A. tomorrow night under the auspices of the New Zealand Labour Party, Masterton branch, has been postponed.
