TOWN IMPROVEMENTS
MASTERTON BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY MANY PROPOSALS BEFORE MEMBERS. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Several matters of interest were considered at a meeting of the general committee of the Masterton Beautifying Society last night. The president, Dr Archer Hosking, occupied the chair. ■ Also present were Mrs R. C. Drummond, Miss S. P. Maunsell, Messrs C. L. Needham, H. E. Gardner, J. M. Lawson, H- M. A. Major, A, J. Towns, F. C. Daniell, L. Robinson, G. G. Tolhurst, E. W. Payton, T. Cripps, A. Keith and A. W. Reynolds. Mrs Drummond asked for permission to withdraw from the general committee, as she was acting on the ladies’ committee. This course was agreed to. Mr Robinson reported that the trees planted by the society in the railway station grounds had been cleared of weed growth and the ground cultivated by the Railways staff. The desire of. the secretary, Mr Reynolds, to withdraw from that position was brought before the meeting by Mr Payton, but after reconsidering the matter Mr Reynolds agreed to carry on, in conjunction with Mr Major as hon treasurer. Mr Payton considered that the society should show its appreciation of the co-operation existing in the past between the society and the Borough Council by reappointing two members of the committee, to be co-opted as members of the Park Committee of the council. Messrs Payton and Robinson were appointed. Stating that she had reorganised the ladies’ committee, Miss Maunsell said her committee felt that some better method of collecting subscriptions was desirable than a door to door canvas. She suggested that subscriptions should be. invited by advertisement and on future occasions notices of subscriptions having become due could be sent out. It was considered by members that the public would be quite willing to subscribe to the society, now that it was known that it had been reorganised and was launching out on a new period of activity. It was decided that meetings of the committee be held monthly, on the last Tuesday of each month. It was also agreed that a schedule of proposed schemes and improvements should be distributed among committee members for their consideration. Mr Reynolds reported that he had inspected the corner of Blair Street (leading to the Hospital) and he considered Mr Daniell’s proposal to round off the corner an excellent one, though he thought that both corners could be so dealt with. On the motion of Mr Daniell it was decided to write to the Lansdowne School Committee explaining what the society suggested and asking it to receive a deputation from the committee. Messrs Payton and Daniell were' appointed to place the society’s proposals before the Lansdowne School Committee.
Mr Daniell mentioned the possibility of forming a shallow lake in the old course of the Waipoua under the first Queen Street bridge and of the installation of a coloured fountain. It was pointed out that some years ago the society had gone so far in promoting a somewhat similar scheme as to have a weir partly constructed but the had been condemned by the Borough Engineer. Since river protection works were in progress, the society felt that nothing further should be done in this matter until those works had been completed. It was decided to defer consideration until the river work was finished.
