FIRE IN DIXON ST.

ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE DONE. A fire which broke out in the washhouse of a five-roomed house, 74 Dixon Street, yesterday afternoon, was extinguished by the Masterton Fire Brigade before a great deal of damage had been done. The brigade received a call by messenger at 4.1 p.m. and two engines turned out. Although leads were run out the brigade was able to deal with the outbreak by the use of fire extinguishers and bucket pumps. The wall between the wash-house and kitchen was damaged by fire, water and cutting away. The house, which is a semi-detached one, is owned by the Public Trustee, and is occupied by Mrs Olive Gourlay. There was no insurance on the contents of the house. It is stated that the fire was caused by a defective copper flue.
