PIRINOA

GOLF SEASON CLOSED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official closing of the golf season took place on Saturday. The weather was fine and the attendance good. A Stableford competition was played, and resulted in a win for- M. Herangi in the men’s section and Mrs Tikao in the ladies. At the conclusion of play the trophies won during the season, which was a very successful one, were presented. The president, Mr R. McDougall, conmented on the successful season the club had, and congratulated the respective winners, and expressed the hope that next season would be an even more successful one. Miss McDougall presented the prizes as follows: —Senior championship, B. McMaster; runner-up, D. Tikao. Junior championship, M. Herangi; runnerup, J. Carter. Ladies’ championship. Mrs Tikao; runner-up, Miss Edgelow. Campbell Cup, B. McMaster; Mrs Busch’s trophy, Mrs Tikao; William Hume Memorial Cup, Mrs Tikao; Sinclair Thompson Cup, J. Riwai; Doughty Memorial Cup, R. McDougall; eclectic competition, G. Munro (men), Mrs Tikao (ladies). At the conclusion of the prize-giving, Mr Trevor Hume expressed the thanks of the club to Mr McDougall for the use of his property. Mr Hume’s remarks were received with much enthusiasm. Gun Club Meeting. The South Wairarapa Gun Club are holding, their annual meeting early next month. The club will, it is expected,, have a very large active membership this season. Oiling of Highway. The oiling of the highway preparatory to tar sealing has been completed of that portion of the road from the Burnside Church to the Pirinoa School. It is rumoured that the residents south of Pirinoa are agitating for the improvement of the road to the Lake Ferry. Rain Benefits Pastures. The weather during last weekend was most unfavourable for picnic parties. The rain, however, was welcomed by the dairy farmers. The pastures have considerably benefited by the rain. Show Successes. Mr H. Smith, manager of the local cheese factory, gained two third prize awards for cheese exhibited at the recent Carterton Show. Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Pirinoa Women’s Institute was held recently. The president (Miss Hanlon) presided over a good attendance. The competition for a table centre made from a small flour bag was won by Mrs H. Smith, with Mrs S. Mclntosh second. Mesdames Spicer and McDonald were appointed delegates to attend the Federation meeting. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames S. Mclntosh, Linton and Oates. Personal Items. Miss Enid Clark, recently was admitted to the Masterton Hospital to undergo a slight operation. Miss Baird, Masterton, was the guest of her sister, Mrs Drummond McMaster, for a few days. Mr Malcolm McLeod has returned from a visit to Marlborough where he attended the wedding of his brother. and Mrs C. O’Connell are staying at the Lake Ferry. Mr O’Connell recently disposed of his interest in the Martinborough Hotel to Mr F. Brough, late of the Lake Ferry. Mr V. Burchall, prior to leaving for Pahiatua, was tendered a farewell social by his many friends in this district. Mr and Mrs Judd, Wellington, were among the visitors here over the holidays. Mr and Mrs H. B. Smith, Dannevirke, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Swainson, Lake Ferry. Miss Edie has been the guest of her sister, Mrs Mclsaac. The German and Swiss Consuls, who were visitors here for the weekend were the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Mitchell, Waitutuma. Mrs J. Phillips, Wellington, is staying with her daughter, Mrs Spicer. Obituary. The death occurred in the Greytown Hospital on Saturday evening of a well-known and highly respected resident of this district in the person of Mr Timi Kara Tunuiarangi (James Carroll) after a short illness. He was 48 years of age and was born at Gladstone, where his father, the late Major Tunuiarangi, was a resident, prior to taking up his residence at Raurua Pirinoa. The late Mr Tunuiarangi was a member of the first Maori battalion during the Great War. He suffered from war effects. He was very popular with all whom he came in contact with. He was a prominent rifle shot, having been a leading member of the now defunct Tuhirangi Rifle Club. He also identified himself with other activities in the district. He is survived by a son and daughter. Mrs Kokiri. wife of the' Rev. P. Kokiri, of Wanganui, is an only sister. The sympathy of the residents of the district will be extended to the relatives. He will probably be interred in the family plot at Hinaua, Gladstone.
