Many experienced fishermen at Russell were puzzled as to the identity of a grotesque fish that was caught off Cape Brett by Mr H. Vipond while hapuka fishing. The fish measures about 18 inches in length, has a large head inclined to be fat. with eyes on top of the head and paws resembling those of a Berkshire boar. The body dwindles to a point at the tail. Inquiries made in the locality indicated that no similar fish had previously been caught in the. Bay of Islands. According to Mr A. W. B. Powell, assistant director at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, the fish is a star-gazer, and apparently is not uncommon, although the large species mentioned is fairly rare.
