WATERFRONT WORK

PROTEST BY EMPLOYERS ( IN NEW PLYMOUTH REDUCTIONS OF WORKING TIME. NOTIFICATION TO UNION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, October 30. Because they allege that waterfront workers arrive at work after the appointed time, and leave before the time set for finishing, employers of waterside labour in New Plymouth have advised the Waterside Workers’ Union that in future they will be paid only for the actual time they are on the job.

Under the award workers have been allowed five minutes to reach the job from the bureau where they are'hired, but it is alleged that the practice has been abused, with resultant loss of a considerable aggregate sum to the employers when several hundred men are working. It is stated that the situation in New Plymouth is not an isolated one, and it is possible that the employers’ move will be of national importance.
