The features that are perhaps the most striking in the round the mountain cycle 'race are the sportsmanship of the competitors and their optimism (states a Taranaki paper.) Possibly S. Hayes, Auckland, the veteran competitor, was the most optimistic. He had been competing in Taranaki for 18 years and the nearest he had been in the race was eighth. However, he was ninth on Saturday and'he said he would win next year. As some grounds for his optimism he pointed out that he had competed unsuccessfully in the Auckland 100 miles race for 12 years but had won it this year, on his thirteenth attempt.
