‘•TIMES-AGE” AGENCY. ("Times-Age” Special.) A telephone has been installed in the home in Belvedere Street of Mr C. J. DeLacey, “Times-Age” representative in Carterton. The number is 278. Preparing for the Show. A commencement was made yesterday by the Power Board staff with the wiring of the Showgrounds for use by side-show stalls. Post Office Hours. The Post and Telegraph Office at Carterton will be closed in all its branches on Monday next, with the exception of the telephone exchange which will remain open continuously. A delivery of correspondence, including registered, will be made over the counter between the hours of 7 and 8 p.m. tomorrow. On Monday all mails will close at 7 a.m., the usual clearance of pillar boxes will be made at 6.30 a.m. The telegraph, postal, money order and savings bank branches will not be open. Postman’s and rural deliveries will not be made. Brightening the Town. A number of business premises in town are being renovated preparatory to painting operations. This will have the effect of brightening up the appearance of the town considerably. Dearth of Dwelling Houses. Land agents state there is a dearth of dwelling houses in Carterton and a cottage anywhere in the borough or its vicinity cannot be rented. New residents have been trying for a week or so to obtain a rented house. Swimming Baths. The Carterton swimming baths and its surroundings are being cleaned up by the Baths committee of the Borough Council in preparation for the swimming season. Perspnal. Mr Rex Lawrence, or the Bank of New South Wales, Masterton, is relieving at the Carterton branch for a fortnight, in the absence of Mr Goodwin, who is on holiday. Very general regret was expressed throughout Carterton today at the death of the Hon. A. D. McLeod. Much sympathy will, be extended to/his widow and family by his many friends in Carterton. Clareville Tennis Club. The annual meeting of the Clareville Tennis Club was held last evening when the following officers were elected for the current season: —Patron, Mr E. D. Clough; president, Mr Murdo Campbell; vice-presidents, Messrs Jas. Fisher, R. T. Reid, A. T. Hawke, C. Campbell, F. S. Scott, G. Thomson, W. B. Allen, N. Hurley, Mrs Peters; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Fishei’ (re-elected). It was resolved to officially open the courts on October 29 with a combined doubles tournament. A Breaches of Licensing Act. For having been on licensed premises after hours Basil Gayfer, William Sage and Frederick Jackson were each fined 10s with 10s costs by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Carterton Magistrate’s Court. The offences occurred on the night of October 1. Senior Sergeant Doggett, of Masterton, stated that in company with Constable Robertson he paid a visit to the Club Hotel, where he found defendants being served with liquor by the barman, Carl Larsen. The licensee was away for the evening. Larsen, for having supplied liquor, was fined £2 with 10s costs, and the licensee, Mrs A. Quinn, was fined £5 with 10s costs for having sold liquor.
