SACRED CANTATA

VERY FINE RENDITION. A very fine rendition of the sacred cantata, “Daniel,” was given in the Methodist Church by the choir under the baton of the choirmaster, Mr S. H. Ralph. The chorus work by the choir Was of a very high order. The frequent changes of tempo, marking the sorrow or joy of the Israelites in their captivity, were well brought out by the choristers, a factor which made interpretation easy for the congregation. From the viewpoint of the congregation the cantata provided a helpful change in the method of worship, the outstanding courage of Daniel and the Princes in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds acting as a challenge in standing against present day evils. The characterisation of the piece was well carried out by Miss Doreen Jamieson as Queen, Miss D. O’Donnell as Sister of Azariah, Mr D. Alan Barns as Daniels, Mr A. Kay as Azariah, Mr W. Davie as King, and Messrs F. Clark and C. H. Skuse as Herald and President. The several quartettes, quintettes, duets and trios, were tunefully rendered by members of the chorus. The changing mood of the cantata and the various interpretations necessary made great demands on the pipe organ accompaniment but these were gracefully met by the outstanding work of the organist, Miss A. M. Jones, L.A.B.
