"It is a strange fact,” comments a magistrate, “that a criminal rarely seems to foresee the probable consequences of his actions.” Once he’s convicted, though, he knows what he’s in for. A correspondent says he lent his garden-roller to a neighbour six weeks ago, and hasn’t seen it since. He should keep on hoping. It’s quite possible the fellow will forget to return it altogether.
