WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. REPORT FOR PAST YEAR. The following is the thirteenth annual report to be presented to the Annual General Meeting of the Association to be held in the Farmers’ Rooms, Perry Street, Masterton, on Friday, October 28, at 8 p.m.:—Your Committee has pleasure in presenting their Annual Report and Balance Sheet for the year 1937-38. The number of affiliated clubs remained the same as the previous year. The Annual Tournament (Championship and Handicap) was again held on the Masterton Club’s courts. Owing to wet weather play was held for ’l| days. The individual number of competitors were slightly less than the previous years. There were 131 (65 men and 66 women) from all parts of the Dominion. The following were the winners of the respective Championship events:—Men’s Singles (44 entries): R. McL. Ferkins (Wellington). Men's Doubles (23 entries): P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa), G. A. Pearce (Wellington). Women’s Singles (32 entries): Mrs A. D. Latham (Wellington). Women’s Doubles (19 entries): Mrs A. D. Latham (Wellington), Miss C. J. Wells (Wellington). Mixed Doubles (36 entries): P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa), Miss C. J. Wells (Wellington). Boys’ Singles (18 entries): A. J. Andrew (Wairarapa). Girls’ Singles (19 entries): Betsy Sutherland (Wairarapa). The 1939 North Island Championships, in conjunction with the Association’s Annual Tournament will be held on Friday 20, Saturday 21, Monday 23 (Anniversary Day), Tuesday 24, and Wednesday 25 January. Association matches were played against Manawatu at Palmerston North for the “Christie Cup” which our team won by the narrowest of margins; Hawke’s Bay at Master ton; Wanganui at Carterton; Wellington at Martinborough, all of which, with the exception of Wellington, were won. We record our thanks to the Manawatu Association for their generous hospitality. A challenge for the “Christie Cup” has been received from the Hawke’s Bay Association. The following players represented the Association in the matches played:—Mesdames P. Hawksworth, L. D. Keedwell, G. S. McLeod, A. H. Ward; Misses Jocelyn Betts, R. G. Bradley, N. Payton; Messrs P. Hawksworth, M. Hobson, L. D. Keedwell, G. S. McLeod, G. S. Simpson, D. H. Ward. Roydhouse Buttons—Again many challenges were played during the year, Messrs L. D. Keedwell and D. L. Taverner (Carterton Club) being the holders fit the end of the season. Vaughan Buttons. — (C. Grade Players): As in the previous year keen contests were waged, Messrs J. Bond and J. Brown being the present holders.
Inter-Club Teams Competitions.— Senior (Gawith Shield) 4 Clubs competed; “B” (Northern) 5 Clubs; “B’ k (Southern) 4 Clubs; “C” (Northern) 8 Clubs; “C” (Southern) 6 Clubs. These matches again created keen competition. The winners of the respective sections were: “Gawith Shield ’ Martinborough Club; “B” Masterton Park; “C” Mount Bruce. In connection with these competitions special thanks are accorded to the Masterton Park and Memorial Clubs for playing teams in the Southern section so as to provide greater competition. The Martinborough Club’s Annual Tournament was again successful and enjoyable. Their dates for this year are Monday 26, Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28, and Thursday 29, December, 1938. Schools’ Tournament. —Owing to varying circumstances only the Northern Primary School tournament was held. Thanks are due to Mr J. A. Kennedy and his helpers for their effort in that direction. Prolonged wet weather conditions prevented the Secondary Schools Tournament being held.
