BITTER FIGHTING
THE JAPANESE DRIVE ON CANTON SOME CONFLICTING CLAIMS. ADVANCE RESISTED STRONGLY. (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) CANTON, October 18. Bitter fighting is progressing in the vicinity of Poklo. The Japanese claim that Poklo itself has been captured. The Chinese affirm that 3000 Japanese were killed in the Waiqhow fighting last week. The Chinese are still strongly resisting the Japanese advance between Waichow and Tsanghsing.
