CATTLE FAIR

VALUES AT MASTERTON DECLINE RECORDED. VENDORS MEET MARKET. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report on their second cattle fail- of the season held yesterday as follows: —An extra heavy yarding of all classes of station cattle came forward, the yard accommodation being taxed to its utmost. There was a large attendance of buyers present, but the representation from the West Coast was not as large as that of our previous fair, with the result that more cattle were purchased by local buyers, although quite a number went to farmers of the Bush district. The cattle yarded were not quite up to the quality of those of our last sale, but making allowances for this prices for male cattle were, generally speaking, quite a bit easier. Female cattle made good values, being keenly sought after, and 2 and 3-yr. heifers, suitable for running with the bull, made improved values. The fat cattle yarded met quite a good market and prices remained well on a par. We again yarded some very attractive lines of grown bullocks, and in this section a pen of 3 and 4-yr. forward conditioned bullocks topped our entry for the day at £lO 9s, these being offered on account of Mr E. C. White. Another pen of forward conditioned 3-yr. P.A. Hereford cross steers offered on account of Mr J. P. Perry, Sulphur Wells, met with good competition and topped the market for 3-year-olds at £lO 2s, and the annual draft of 3-yr. P.A. steers from Messrs G. and J. Moore, “Epairama,” made £9 11s. The 2-yr. price was topped by an attractive line of well grown 2-yr. Hereford steers offered on account of estate late C. B. Pharzyn at £B, and a pen of well grown P.A. yearlings offered on account of Mr J. Savage topped the yearling section for the day at £5 Bs. There were several attractive lines of 2-yr. P.A. heifers yarded and competition for these-! was keen a quality pen offered on account of Messrs G. and J. Moore making £6 Ils, and another very attractive line on account of Mr John Savage, Tiraumea, fell to the bid of £6 10s. Although prices were inclined in some classes, to be easier, vendors met the market and a total clearance was recorded, the following list of our principal sales indicating values:—3 and 4-yr. P.A. steers, a/c E. C. White, £lO 9s; 3-yr. P.A. cross steers, a/c J. P. Perry, £lO 2s; 3-yr. P.A. store ‘ conditioned P.A. steers, a/c lan Bunny, £9 ss; do., a/c T. R. The annual draft of fat cows offered on account of Tikitapu Station, under keen competition made up to £8 17s 6d. WRIGHT STEPHENSON & CO. Wright, Stephenson and Co, Ltd, report: A record number of cattle came forward at our second Masterton spring cattle fair, held in the Colombo Road yards yesterday. Buyers were present from all parts of the Wairarapa, and several were also present from the West Coast. With few exceptions the cattle were in good store condition, some of th.e grown bullocks being particularly good, and we obtained £ll for a very nice pen in this seption offered on behalf of Mr Ken Groves. Prices for male cattle were not up to the first fair, big cattle being down 10s per head; but the biggest drop was in the young steers, and we consider these back £ 1 per head. Female cattle held their own, and the outside buyers were active bidders on these and took quite a big proportion of the offering'. The grown bullocks were bought by local graziers, while several pens of 2-yr and yearling steers fell to the bid of West Coast buyers. It was anticipated before the sale that prices ranging at the first fair would not hold yesterday, but vendors were out to meet the market, realizing that in spite of a slight drop, prices were still up to a very paying basis. Passings were few and we only turned 4 steers out of the yards unsold, and this was out of our total offering of just on 800 head. Several pens of fat cattle were submitted and prices were a shade easier. The following are particulars of our prices: A/c Geo Taylor, Craigulea, 3 and 4yr bullocks £lO, fat cows £B, fat heifers £9; a/c Tinakori station, Syr steers £9 12s; a/c Ken Groves, 4yr bullocks £11; a/c J. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report that an exceptionally large entry of station cattle came forward. There was a good attendance of the public including many outside buyers. The cattle came forward in good condition although the quality on the whole was not as good as the previous fair held . a fortnight ago. All steers appeared to be easier from 15s to 20s per head, I

while females did not seem to be down to the same amount. However, with the decrease in prices all our vendors met the market and we bad a total clearance. The following were the prices:— Fat cattle: Fat bullocks, £ll, £l2 5s to £l2 16s; fat cows, £7 17s 6d to £8 ss; light vealers, £1 5s to £2. Steers: Good Hereford ’bullocks, a/c J. A. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op-erative Distributing Co., Ltd., report:— We submitted an entry of 930 head to a large attendance of Wanganui, Manawatu, Pahiatua and Wairarapa buyers. Prices were generally easier than those ruling a fortnight ago. The dry weather experienced during the intervening period is stated to be a contributing cause. However, most of the vendors were ready to meet the market and a very satisfactory clearance was effected. Bullocks depreciated in value about £1 per head. Two-year-old and yearling steers were down from 15s to 20s, although the quality was not as good, as at the previous fair. Any good lines of good quality two-year-old P.A. heifers were keenly competed for and prices in this particular section showed a hardening tendency.
