RAILWAY BLOCKADE

TROUBLE ,IN MANAWATU GORGE. HAWKE’S BAY TRAINS USE WAIRARAPA LINE. - The slip on the railway line in the Manawatu Gorge is causing considerable trouble, as the hillside continues to move downwards. As a result, the work of removing the obstruction has been delayed. Goods traffic has been allowed through the gorge during the daytime, but so far the line has not been considered safe enough for passenger trains. On account of the blockage, passenger trains to and from Napier have been proceeding via the Wairarapa, the down train being linked up with the ordinary Woodville-Wellington mail train. Special goods trains, one in each direction, have been run via the Wairarapa during the night, but otherwise the existing services, with the addition of extra trucks, have been able to cope with traffic requirements.
